The life of the lonely hiker continued. Other than passing a few hikers going SOBO, probably section or day hikers, I didn't see anyone else until I got to the shelter.
During my hike, I walked up in a deer. I've seen several throughout the hike so far, but this one was standing about 10 feet from me. It stood there staring at me for a bit. It finally bounded off after I snapped a picture and continued hiking.
The Chestnut Knob Shelter was an old fire warden's cabin, so until most shelters, this one was made of stone and fully enclosed.
As I was sitting at the picnic table outside making dinner, Crush, a fellow thru-hiker, was commenting about needing to get a new ID since he lost his. I just so happened to have found his ID on the trail a day or two ago and was able to quickly pull it out and hand it to him like some sort of sorceress. Frodo, another hiker who was hiking with Crush, commented on how it was like magic.
I setup in the shelter for the night which was nice since I woke up to heavy winds and rain overnight. I'm glad I wasn't tenting for that.
